Military and Mining Asbestos Exposure in Tucson

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base hosts the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) — colloquially known as the aircraft boneyard — where over 4,000 retired military aircraft are stored, maintained, or demilitarized. Workers who perform aircraft maintenance, removal of components, or aircraft demilitarization at AMARC were exposed to asbestos-containing aircraft brake systems, engine gaskets, and hydraulic line insulation in aircraft manufactured before 1990. Additionally, D-M's regular aircraft maintenance operations for the active 355th Wing exposed mechanics to asbestos materials. The Sierrita copper mine southwest of Tucson and Mission Mine employed maintenance workers exposed to asbestos pipe insulation in underground and surface processing operations.
