Atlanta's Construction and Aerospace Asbestos Exposure History
Atlanta's transformation from a mid-sized Southern city to a major metropolitan center accelerated in the 1950s-1970s, with massive construction of downtown office towers, government buildings, expressways, and MARTA transit infrastructure. All of this construction used asbestos building materials — spray fireproofing on structural steel in high-rises, asbestos pipe insulation in commercial buildings, floor and ceiling tiles in schools and offices. Construction trades workers throughout the Atlanta metro area accumulated significant asbestos exposure during this building boom. Lockheed-Georgia (now Lockheed Martin Aeronautics) in Marietta built C-130 Hercules and C-5 Galaxy aircraft using asbestos-containing aircraft components. Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta employed aircraft maintenance personnel with similar aerospace asbestos exposure.
