Chicago's Industrial Asbestos Exposure Legacy
Chicago's steel mills, led by U.S. Steel's massive South Works on the lakefront and the Gary Works just across the Indiana border, employed hundreds of thousands of workers who were exposed to asbestos insulation on boilers, blast furnaces, and process piping. The Pullman Company's railroad car manufacturing plants used asbestos extensively in brake linings and insulation. Standard Oil (now BP) operated the Whiting Refinery just east of Chicago in Indiana — one of the largest refineries in the country — with significant asbestos pipe insulation throughout. Chicago's building trades union workers — electricians, plumbers, ironworkers, and insulators — who worked on the city's skyline construction from the 1940s through the 1980s were exposed to asbestos fireproofing spray applied to structural steel.
