Industrial Asbestos Exposure in Indianapolis
Indianapolis's industrial asbestos exposure is centered on automotive and turbine manufacturing. Allison Gas Turbine Division (now Rolls-Royce North America), which manufactured gas turbine engines for military aircraft and commercial applications, used asbestos extensively in high-temperature turbine insulation, gaskets, and thermal barrier materials. Chrysler's Indianapolis manufacturing complex and related supplier facilities used asbestos in brake systems and engine components. The Standard Oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana (just northwest of Indianapolis, accessible to Indy workers) was a major source of refinery maintenance exposure. Indianapolis city and county building construction throughout the 1950s-1970s used asbestos extensively in public buildings, schools, and the Indiana State Capitol complex.
