Malmstrom Air Force Base in Cascade County is home to the 341st Missile Wing operating Minuteman III ICBMs. The base's extensive aviation and helicopter operations require substantial AFFF capability, and decades of AFFF firefighting training have generated documented PFAS in groundwater affecting Great Falls-area water supplies. The Air Force's own epidemiological study of 2,588 servicemen stationed at Malmstrom found a testicular cancer rate 3.7 times higher than age-matched national controls — one of the most compelling pieces of direct military population data on PFAS and cancer in any U.S. community. This study data creates extremely strong general causation evidence for testicular cancer claims arising from Malmstrom exposure. Great Falls-area veterans with testicular cancer claims have a direct Air Force-commissioned study supporting their causation argument.
