Research Triangle and Power Industry Asbestos Exposure
Research Triangle Park's pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing facilities — built from the 1960s through the 1980s — used asbestos pipe insulation in high-temperature chemical processing operations. Glaxo (now GSK), Burroughs Wellcome, and other early RTP tenants operated facilities where maintenance workers replaced asbestos pipe insulation and equipment gaskets. Duke Energy's Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant (New Hill, outside Raleigh) and the now-closed Sutton Steam Plant (Wilmington) employed maintenance workers exposed to asbestos pipe insulation and boiler materials in power plant operations. The North Carolina State Capitol complex and state office buildings throughout downtown Raleigh used asbestos building materials extensively in their mid-century construction.
