Asbestos Exposure in Las Vegas's Building Boom and Military Operations
Las Vegas's rapid casino and hotel construction from the Flamingo in 1946 through the 1970s high-rise boom used asbestos fireproofing spray on structural steel, asbestos ceiling tiles, and asbestos floor tiles as standard practice. Iron workers, electricians, and other building trades workers on the Strip and downtown casino construction were exposed to asbestos during application and subsequent renovation work. Nellis Air Force Base north of Las Vegas is one of the Air Force's premier tactical fighter wings — aircraft maintenance mechanics at Nellis worked with asbestos-containing aircraft components throughout the Cold War.
