Rideshare Sexual Assault in New York City
New York City processes more rideshare trips than almost any other city in the world. While NYC's TLC fingerprint requirement provides a stronger baseline of driver screening than most U.S. markets, it does not eliminate assault risk. Fingerprint checks find records in U.S. databases but do not screen international criminal history — a significant gap in a city with a diverse international driver base. Despite the TLC's stronger regulatory stance, sexual assault lawsuits against Uber and Lyft drivers in New York City are filed regularly. Survivors can file civil claims in New York state court or join the federal MDL proceedings in the Northern District of California. New York's 20-year civil SOL means that survivors assaulted in New York City as far back as 2006 may still have active claims under the Adult Survivors Act.
