Methodology

How This Tool Works

This checker scores three core Public Service Loan Forgiveness requirements: qualifying employment (government or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit), having Direct Loans, and being on an income-driven repayment plan (studentaid.gov). Each adds one point. The payment-count question does not add points but reminds you that PSLF requires 120 qualifying monthly payments, roughly 10 years. PSLF eligibility is in flux: following Executive Order 14235 (Mar. 7, 2025), a Department of Education rule takes effect July 1, 2026 and revises which employers qualify by excluding those found to have a substantial illegal purpose, counting only conduct on or after July 1, 2026 (ed.gov). Because the rules are changing, this tool is educational only and no outcome is guaranteed.
