Contingency fees make injury litigation accessible: most claimants pay nothing upfront, and the attorney collects only if money is recovered. The percentage, what counts as 'expenses,' and whether expenses come out before or after the percentage all vary — ask any firm to put its structure in writing.
In mass torts the contingency fee is one layer of several: court-ordered common-benefit holdbacks (3–11%), case expenses, and medical liens also come out of gross recoveries. In Camp Lejeune, the Department of Justice applied caps of 20% (administrative) and 25% (litigation).
