NHTSA Opens Four Investigations Into Truck Component Failures

What happened

Between April and July 2026, NHTSA opened four separate investigations into truck component issues: Front Steering Knuckle Fractures (opened April 24, 2026), Rear Toe Link May Separate (opened May 26, 2026), Carry Handle Separation (opened July 6, 2026), and Lower Lateral Link Detachment (opened July 29, 2026). Details on affected vehicles and root causes have not yet been published.

    NHTSA Opens Multiple Investigations Into Drivetrain, Engine, and Brake Failures

    The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a new investigation on September 14, 2026, into a driveshaft-to-rear-differential connection failure. In the weeks prior, NHTSA also opened separate investigations into a timing belt failure (July 31), engine failure after a recall remedy leading to loss of motive power (August 20), a second loss-of-motive-power issue (September 3), and an electronic brake module component failure (August 21). These mechanical failure modes are relevant to commercial vehicle safety because sudden loss of power or braking can contribute to roadway crashes.
