Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening inflammatory disease of the intestines that primarily strikes premature and low-birthweight infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In NEC, bacteria invade the immature intestinal wall, causing progressive tissue death (necrosis), which can lead to bowel perforation, bacterial sepsis, and multi-organ failure. NEC kills approximately 15,000 premature infants in the United States each year and is the leading cause of death from gastrointestinal disease in the NICU. Survivors often face lifelong consequences including Short Bowel Syndrome, TPN dependency, and neurodevelopmental disabilities.
