Vermont: PERMANENT elimination of civil SOL for childhood sexual abuse (effective June 2019). No filing deadline — claims can be brought at any time.
No deadline — permanent elimination of civil SOL (effective June 2019)
Where to File in Vermont
Vermont enacted legislation effective June 2019 that permanently eliminated the civil statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse claims against private organizations, government entities, and individuals. This means Vermont survivors of Catholic clergy abuse can file civil lawsuits at any time, regardless of when the abuse occurred and regardless of the survivor's current age. The Diocese of Burlington has published a credibly accused clergy list. No Vermont diocese has filed for bankruptcy as of February 2026. Vermont's permanent SOL elimination makes it one of the most survivor-friendly legal environments in the country for clergy abuse claims.
