Asbestos in Automotive Friction Products

Chrysotile asbestos was the primary ingredient in automotive friction materials — brake pads, drum brake linings, and clutch facing discs — throughout the 20th century. Asbestos provided superior heat resistance essential for braking performance, and virtually every major automotive manufacturer used asbestos-containing brake components through the late 1990s. When mechanics blow out brake drums with compressed air, grind brake pads on a brake lathe, or machine brake rotors and drums, they release asbestos fibers into the work area. Pre-1990s shops lacked containment enclosures, HEPA filtration, and wet-grinding procedures — mechanics worked in environments with visible brake dust clouds.

Legal Claims for Auto Mechanic Asbestos Exposure

Brake pad asbestos claims are contested because defendants argue that chrysotile (white) asbestos in brake pads is less dangerous than the amphibole asbestos (crocidolite, amosite) more strongly associated with mesothelioma. However, epidemiological studies have documented elevated mesothelioma incidence in auto mechanics, and plaintiffs' experts present affirmative evidence of chrysotile's pathogenicity. Solvent defendants include Honeywell International (successor to Bendix Corporation, the leading brake pad manufacturer), Federal-Mogul/Tenneco (successor to Wagner and other brands — Federal-Mogul has an asbestos trust from bankruptcy), and other brake manufacturers.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium — the thin membrane lining the lungs (pleura), abdomen (peritoneum), or heart (pericardium). It is distinct from lung cancer, which originates in the lung tissue itself. Mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure and does not arise from smoking. Lung cancer, while also caused by asbestos in some cases, is far more commonly caused by tobacco smoking. Both are compensable through asbestos trust funds and litigation, but mesothelioma claims typically produce higher compensation because the disease is more directly and singularly attributable to asbestos.
