Peritoneal mesothelioma develops in the peritoneum — the membrane lining the abdominal cavity and covering organs such as the stomach, intestines, liver, and spleen. It arises when asbestos fibers are ingested or migrate to the abdomen via the lymphatic system from the lungs. It accounts for approximately 20-25% of all mesothelioma diagnoses and is somewhat more common in women than pleural mesothelioma, possibly due to different fiber migration pathways and hormonal factors. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, unexplained weight loss, and ascites — abnormal fluid accumulation in the abdomen that can cause significant discomfort and distension.

CRS + HIPEC: A Potentially Curative Approach

The landmark treatment advance for peritoneal mesothelioma is cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). In this procedure, a surgeon removes all visible peritoneal tumor implants — which may involve partial resection of the bowel, liver surface, or other abdominal organs — and then circulates heated chemotherapy drugs (usually cisplatin) directly through the abdominal cavity immediately after surgery. The heat increases drug penetration into remaining microscopic cancer cells. At specialized centers performing high volumes of CRS/HIPEC, median survival for peritoneal mesothelioma patients has exceeded 5 years, compared to 6-12 months for those treated with systemic chemotherapy alone. Eligibility for HIPEC requires careful patient selection — performance status, disease distribution, and kidney function are key criteria.

Legal Compensation for Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma carries the same legal classification (Level VIII disease) in asbestos trust funds as pleural mesothelioma, entitling victims to maximum trust fund compensation. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium — the thin membrane lining the lungs (pleura), abdomen (peritoneum), or heart (pericardium). It is distinct from lung cancer, which originates in the lung tissue itself. Mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure and does not arise from smoking.
