Who Is Novo Nordisk?

Novo Nordisk is a Danish pharmaceutical company that has become one of the most valuable companies in Europe on the strength of its GLP-1 drug franchise. Semaglutide products (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) generated $29.3 billion in 2024 revenue — 70% of the company's total sales. The company's market capitalization exceeded $500 billion at its peak.

The Marketing Machine

Novo Nordisk invested heavily in direct-to-consumer advertising, social media marketing, and physician promotion of Ozempic and Wegovy. The drugs became cultural phenomena, driven by celebrity endorsements and social media trends. This aggressive marketing created demand that outpaced safety monitoring.

The Pricing Controversy

In September 2024, the Senate HELP Committee grilled Novo Nordisk CEO Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen over pricing: Ozempic costs 9x more in the U.S. than Germany; Wegovy costs 4.5x more than in Denmark. The pricing scrutiny adds to the corporate conduct narrative relevant to punitive damages.

The Label Update Timeline

Novo Nordisk knew from clinical trials that 82.2% of patients experienced GI adverse events. The ileus warning was added in September 2023. The gastroparesis language was not added until January 2025. The NAION warning was required by the EMA in Europe in August 2024 but has not been added to U.S. labels. This delayed warning pattern is the core of the failure-to-warn case.
