Every rideshare trip generates a detailed digital record in the platform's servers. GPS data captures the vehicle's location at regular intervals throughout the trip, creating a timestamped map of the route actually driven. This data can reveal route deviations — when a driver takes the passenger to a location other than the requested destination — that are often present in assault cases. Timestamps show when the trip began, when it ended, and any unexpected stops. The driver's identity and vehicle registration are linked to every trip record.
In-app communications — messages sent through the Uber or Lyft driver-passenger chat feature — are preserved and producible in litigation. If the driver made inappropriate comments during the trip, those communications may be preserved. Post-trip communications between the survivor and Uber or Lyft customer service regarding a reported assault are also part of the discoverable record and may reveal how the company responded to the complaint.
Driver Complaint History
Each driver's profile includes a history of all passenger ratings, reviews, and complaints. Uber and Lyft's internal complaint handling records reveal how these prior complaints were categorized, reviewed, and acted upon (or not acted upon).
