NHTSA Opens Multiple Vehicle Safety Investigations in 2026

What happened
Between March and July 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a series of investigations into vehicle safety issues, including inadvertent air bag deployment, lower lateral link detachment, timing belt failure, fuel smell and power loss, ABS warning light illumination, steering knuckle fractures, rear toe link separation, rental of vehicles with open recalls, carry handle separation, and automated driving system conflict avoidance.
