NHTSA Opens Nine New Vehicle Safety Investigations

What happened
Between July 6 and September 3, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened nine separate investigations covering issues including carry handle separation, inadvertent air bag deployment, lower lateral link detachment, timing belt failure, heat exchanger damage from road debris, engine failure after a prior recall remedy, electronic brake module failure, intermittent loss of braking in a 2024 Ford Maverick Hybrid, and loss of motive power. A related probe into Tesla Cybercab FMVSS certification was also opened September 3, 2026.
