Methodology and limits

Source: the same verified monthly JPML Pending MDL reports used by the MDL Monitor, supplemented by initial transfer orders from GovInfo, CourtListener and JPML. Titles, courts and pending actions remain tied to each monthly report. The same verified orders apply to all four archived editions.

Classification precedence: a verified verbatim transfer-order quote and its categories; otherwise the original title keyword rules in their declared order (first match wins); otherwise “Not stated in the MDL title or transfer order.” Each row identifies its basis. Non-injury MDLs appear only in “Not injury litigation,” with a one-word scope reason.

Order quotes were retrieved and checked locally on October 6, 2026, before publication. Each order URL was fetched once; PDF text was extracted with pdftotext and opinion text from the source page. A quote must appear continuously after collapsing whitespace and contain at most 40 words. Punctuation, page headers and footnotes are not rewritten or removed. Quotes failing that check are excluded. No verification requests run during a build.

Quotes are reproduced verbatim and describe what plaintiffs allege when the MDL was created. They are not court findings or proof of causation. Later cases may allege injuries not named in the initial order. “Not stated” means neither a verified quote nor a title rule identifies a mapped injury; it does not mean there was no injury or possible claim. Product-liability titles can include economic-loss claims.

Order categories may overlap. When the quote states a specific injury covered by the split rules below, that category replaces “Other stated injury.” Generic injury remains Other. Do not sum category docket or action counts. Each CSV has one row per docket, with multiple categories separated by semicolons, plus basis, order date, order URL and the exact quote. Unverified quotes have empty order fields.

No injury is inferred from a brand, ingredient, defendant, product, PJ hub or injury guide. Device / implant and Birth / infant title fallbacks are topics and do not establish a diagnosis. Hub links use the published English caseType's exact MDL number; guides use its explicit related-case references. They remain current editorial links and do not affect classification. A missing link does not mean there is no litigation or possible claim.

JPML counts civil actions, not plaintiffs or injuries. One action may include several people. The latest view may lag JPML. Each archived month retains its CSV URL, source report, citation and Dataset metadata. Updated verified orders can reclassify historical editions without changing archived titles or counts.

Use supplied categories only for verified verbatim quotes. When a specific split rule matches the quote, replace other with every matching split category; preserve other supplied categories. No matching uses product titles or later claims.
